SMART job design
I love the SMART job design framework as a conversation scaffold. It creates a consistent language for us to explore the demands of roles and impacts on our people.
For leaders wanting to utilise this frame for check-ins, but a bit unsure how to get started, here's a great way to introduce this framework with your people and get an insight on what's to come before the meeting starts.
1. Send them the online assessment to allow them to assess their job using the SMART framework, you can find the assessment at https://www.transformativeworkdesign.com/smart-work
2. Ask them to send it through to you the day before your meeting.
3. Do the assessment yourself, on their job. Don't wait to receive their copy, do it straight away so you're not biased by their feedback.
4. Review the similarities and differences. Now plan your conversation to explore those differences and reaffirm the similarities, working together to identify ways you can fill the gaps and support them to achieve greater balance across the SMART framework in their role.
Conversations like this don't need to be hard, and you don't need expensive systems or processes to support the conversation to take place.
It would be great to hear how your conversation goes, and the insights you found from using this resource to get the conversation started. Give it a go and reach out to let me know how it goes.
If you would like some additional support in making your check-ins more meaningful, reach out and lets see how we could work together to improve your performance discussions.
