Psychological safety isn’t just a wellbeing trend – it’s business-critical as Australian organisations respond to new psychosocial safety obligations and the real risks created by unchecked hazards such as workload, conflict and exclusion.
From my work and academic research, I've seen that compliance alone doesn't create safety. Policies and risk registers matter, but they only work when people genuinely feel safe to speak up - and to do so early.
Raising issues, ideas and mistakes can feel difficult in an environment where speaking up is not the norm. Research from experts such as William Kahn and Amy Edmondson shows that psychologically safe workplaces drive deeper engagement, performance and a greater sense of belonging.
Yet many organisations are still struggling to create a psychologically safe culture. My research showed that close to 40% of the relationship between inclusive leadership and workplace belonging could be explained by psychological safety. When people feel heard and safe, they’re more likely to stay engaged and well.
As an Org Psych in training, I help leaders and teams turn psychosocial risk expectations into day-to-day behaviours, conversations and systems that genuinely support psychological safety and belonging.
If your organisation is working through the “so what now?” of psychosocial regulations, I’d love to connect.
